CRC Press is a publishing imprint principally for technical books, many of them on engineering, science and mathematics, with further lists in business, forensics and information technology. It began in 1903 as the publishing component of the Chemical Rubber Company, founded in Cleveland, Ohio by the brothers Arthur, Leo and Emanuel Friedman, whose earlier enterprise sold rubber laboratory aprons. In 1913 the company offered a short manual called the Rubber Handbook as an incentive for buying a dozen aprons, and that manual grew into the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, its flagship title. In 1973 the company renamed itself CRC Press, Inc. and left manufacturing. Times Mirror bought it in 1986, it was sold in 1996 to Information Ventures, and in 2003 it became part of Taylor and Francis, which in 2004 became part of the British publisher Informa.
