China Eastern Airlines is one of China's "Big Three" airlines alongside Air China and China Southern, headquartered in Shanghai and formed in 1988 during the same restructuring of the Civil Aviation Administration of China that created Air China. Its principal hubs are Shanghai's two major airports, Pudong International and Hongqiao International, reflecting Shanghai's role as China's primary financial and commercial center, and the airline joined the SkyTeam alliance in 2011. China Eastern absorbed the former China Northwest Airlines and China Yunnan Airlines in earlier consolidations of China's domestic airline industry, and it remains majority state-owned through central government holding entities.
