Chantiers de l'Atlantique is a shipyard at Saint-Nazaire in France, near Nantes at the mouth of the Loire, whose deep Atlantic access eases the launch of very large vessels. It is Europe's largest shipyard and among the largest in the world, building commercial, naval and passenger ships, and it is the yard that built the Queen Mary 2. Ownership changed several times: it belonged to Alstom from 1976 as Alstom-Atlantique, passed to Aker Yards in 2006 and to South Korea's STX in 2008 as part of STX Europe, and after STX's bankruptcy it was acquired by the French government and regained its original name.
