Belga News Agency is Belgium's sole national news agency, founded on 20 August 1920 by engineer Maurice Travailleur, journalist Pierre-Marie Olivier and King Albert I as the Societe Anonyme Agence Telegraphique Belge, beginning operations on 1 January 1921. Shut down and replaced by the Nazi-controlled Belga Press during the World War Two occupation, it was rebuilt after liberation in 1944, split into separate Dutch- and French-language departments in 1970 to reflect Belgium's linguistic divide, and today employs about 80 permanent journalists and 30 correspondents from its Brussels headquarters.
