AXA SA is a French multinational insurance company headquartered in Paris, formed through a series of mergers of French mutual insurers beginning in the 1980s under Claude Bebear, who consolidated them under the AXA name, chosen as a short, easily pronounced word carrying no specific meaning in any language. It grew through further international acquisitions into one of the world's largest insurance companies, operating across life insurance, property and casualty insurance and asset management.
