American Airlines is a major American airline headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, tracing its roots to American Airways, formed in 1930 through the consolidation of dozens of small airmail carriers and renamed American Airlines in 1934. Its 2013 merger with US Airways, completed while American's parent was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, created what became for a time the world's largest airline by fleet size, scheduled passengers carried and revenue. A founding member of the Oneworld alliance in 1999, American operates major hub airports at Dallas/Fort Worth, Charlotte, Chicago O'Hare, Miami and Phoenix, and its parent company is American Airlines Group.
