Amar Kutir is a cooperative cottage industry established in 1927 by the freedom fighter Sushen Mukherjee near Santiniketan in West Bengal, India, originally created to give underground independence activists a livelihood while sheltering them from British surveillance. After Mukherjee's imprisonment in 1930 its activities halted until his release in 1937, and following India's independence it was reorganized as a cooperative producing and selling handicrafts such as batik and kantha embroidery. It continues to train more than a thousand artisans, particularly women, in these traditional crafts.
