AM General is an American maker of heavy and military vehicles based in South Bend, Indiana, best known for the Humvee used by the United States armed forces and for the civilian Hummer that came from it. Its roots lie in the Jeep business that passed from Willys to Kaiser and then to American Motors, which made the military products division a wholly owned subsidiary in 1971. General Motors acquired the rights to the Hummer brand in 1999, while AM General went on building the Hummer vehicles at its Mishawaka plant.
