Alstom SA is a French multinational rail transport systems manufacturer, active in passenger transportation, rail services, signalling and locomotives, and producing high-speed, suburban, regional and urban trains along with trams. The company and its name, originally spelled Alsthom, were formed in 1928 by a merger between the electric engineering division of Societe Alsacienne de Constructions Mecaniques and Compagnie Francaise Thomson-Houston. Later acquisitions included Constructions Electriques de France in 1932 and the shipbuilder Chantiers de l'Atlantique in 1976, which was sold in 2006. It is headquartered in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, France.
