Air Canada is the flag carrier and largest airline of Canada, headquartered in the Saint-Laurent borough of Montreal and tracing its origin to Trans-Canada Air Lines, a federal Crown corporation established in 1936, which was renamed Air Canada in 1965. The airline was privatized in the late 1980s and became a founding member of the Star Alliance in 1997. Air Canada operates its principal hubs at Toronto Pearson, Montreal-Trudeau and Vancouver International airports, and it acquired its former domestic rival Canadian Airlines in 2000, consolidating its position as by far the largest carrier serving the Canadian market.
