Aeroflot is the flag carrier of Russia, headquartered in Moscow, with roots reaching back to 1923, making it one of the oldest continuously operating airlines in the world. During the Soviet era, Aeroflot was the state monopoly airline and for decades the largest airline in the world by fleet size and passengers carried, before splitting into numerous successor carriers after the 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union and reorganizing into a joint-stock company with the modern Russian state retaining a majority stake. Aeroflot had been a member of the SkyTeam alliance since 2006, but its international partnerships were sharply curtailed after 2022, when Western sanctions imposed in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to its suspension from SkyTeam and the loss of most of its Western-built aircraft leases and routes.
