Aer Lingus is the flag carrier of Ireland, founded in 1936 and headquartered at Dublin Airport, which remains its principal hub for both short-haul European routes and transatlantic service to North America. Long majority state-owned, the airline was privatized in stages beginning in the 2000s, and in 2015 International Airlines Group acquired full ownership, bringing Aer Lingus into the same corporate family as British Airways and Iberia while it continues to operate under its own distinct green livery and Irish identity. Aer Lingus has built a significant transatlantic business by using Ireland's location and US pre-clearance facilities at Dublin and Shannon airports to connect European and North American travelers, and it holds Oneworld alliance affiliate status through its IAG membership.
