Printing is the process of mass-reproducing text and images from a master form or template, tracing back to cylinder seals and stone-tablet ink rubbings by the sixth century, woodblock printing in China's Tang dynasty by the seventh century, movable type invented around 1040 by Bi Sheng in China and carried to Korea and Europe by the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and Johannes Gutenberg's fifteenth-century metal-type printing press. Gutenberg's press transformed the scale of the trade: European book output rose from a few million copies to around one billion copies within less than four centuries of its introduction. The modern industry spans conventional processes such as offset, gravure, and flexography alongside digital printing and emerging methods such as three-dimensional printing. It has evolved from a single revolutionary invention into a diverse manufacturing sector serving contemporary publishing, packaging, and communication needs.

FAQs

Which printing process is used most in United States commercial printing?

In the early 2000s, lithography, including offset, handled about 56 percent of United States commercial printing by value, and gravure about 4 percent.

In the early 2000s, about 56 percent of United States commercial printing by dollar value was done by lithography, and about 4 percent of commercial printing sales were gravure. In offset lithography an image is transferred from a plate onto a rubber blanket cylinder and then pressed onto paper or another material. Gravure is generally preferred for very long runs, over 300,000 copies, such as weekly or monthly magazines and mass-distributed catalogs, because it can produce millions of impressions without the image deteriorating, though it generally costs more and takes longer to set up.
