Henry Mintzberg is a Canadian academic and author on business and management, born 2 September 1939 in Montreal, Quebec. He has taught at McGill University's Desautels Faculty of Management since 1968, where he holds the Cleghorn Professorship of Management Studies. He developed an organizational configurations framework describing six organizational types and a theory of six coordination mechanisms, and he is known for emphasizing emergent strategy over deliberate strategy and for his criticism of formal strategic planning, set out in books including The Nature of Managerial Work and The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning.
