Birger Wernerfelt (born 1951) is a Danish economist and management theorist who serves as J. C. Penney Professor of Management Emeritus at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is known for his 1984 article A Resource-Based View of the Firm, which named and helped launch the resource-based view as a framework in strategic management, and for his later adaptation-cost theory of the firm.
