An American business and management consultant who worked at the Stanford Research Institute (later SRI International) on a team led by Robert Stewart that developed the SOFT framework, a precursor commonly credited, not fully accurately, as the sole origin of SWOT analysis.
Widely credited in popular business accounts as the sole inventor of SWOT analysis, but his own documented record shows he worked on the precursor SOFT framework at the Stanford Research Institute as part of a team led by Robert Stewart, not as sole author; see the dissent recorded on the swot-analysis entity.

Why this is disputed. Popular attribution names Humphrey alone; the documented record credits a Stanford Research Institute team led by Robert Stewart, with Humphrey as a team member, and a competing Harvard-origin claim was separately debunked in 2023. Theories and Models Developed: SWOT Analysis
Crediting Albert S. Humphrey alone as the inventor of SWOT analysis overstates his individual role. Humphrey worked on the SOFT framework as part of a Stanford Research Institute team led by Robert Stewart; a separate, long-repeated claim that the framework originated at Harvard Business School in 1965 was examined and rejected in 2023 by business historians Puyt, Lie and Wilderom, who called it an academic urban legend. The honest state of the evidence credits a team effort under Stewart's leadership, not a single named originator.
