Al Ries (14 November 1926 to 7 October 2022) was an American marketing professional and author known for co-developing the concept of positioning in marketing strategy alongside Jack Trout. Their ideas first appeared in a 1972 series of articles in Advertising Age and were expanded into the 1981 book Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind, which became foundational to modern marketing theory. Ries later co-founded the consulting firm Ries and Ries with his daughter Laura Ries and was inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame by the American Marketing Association's New York chapter in 2016.
