A biopharmaceutical, also called a biological medical product or biologic, is a pharmaceutical drug product manufactured in, extracted from, or semisynthesized from a biological source, distinguishing it from a fully synthetic pharmaceutical. The category includes vaccines, blood components, allergenics, gene therapies, tissues, recombinant therapeutic proteins, monoclonal antibodies and cell therapies, made of sugars, proteins, nucleic acids or complex combinations of these substances, and isolated from human, animal, plant, fungal or microbial sources for use in human and veterinary medicine.
