Product stewardship

Product stewardship is an approach to managing the environmental impact of products and materials across their full lifecycle, from production through to disposal, built on the idea that manufacturers, retailers, consumers and recyclers all share responsibility for that impact. For manufacturers this can mean planning for recycling, redesigning products to be more durable and recyclable, and using recycled materials; for retailers and consumers it means taking an active part in proper end of life disposal or recycling. Container deposit legislation, where customers pay a small fee on bottles that is refunded when the container is returned, is a widely used example, and the concept is closely related to, though broader than, the idea of extended producer responsibility.
