Automotive oil recycling is the reprocessing of used oils from vehicles and hydraulic systems into new products. Recycled motor oil can be burned as fuel in industrial settings, or it can be re-refined, a process that removes chemical impurities, heavy metals and dirt so the oil approaches near-new condition while keeping its lubricating properties. The practice is driven largely by environmental protection: a single gallon of motor oil dumped into waterways can pollute as much as one million gallons of water.
