Whale oil

Whale oil is oil obtained from the blubber of whales, once an important fuel for illumination as well as for machine lubrication and other uses. Despite the growing availability of petroleum-based alternatives such as kerosene, whales continued to be harvested for their oil well past the mid-20th century, and although its use has almost entirely ceased today, this followed only after the decline of commercial whaling.
