Straw is an agricultural byproduct consisting of the dry stalks of cereal plants left over once the grain and chaff have been removed, and it makes up roughly half the weight of the yield of cereal crops such as barley, oats, rice, rye and wheat. It is put to use as fuel, as livestock bedding and fodder, for thatching and for basket making, and it is usually gathered and stored in straw bales, tightly bound bundles of straw shaped square, rectangular, star shaped or round depending on the baling equipment used. Chemically straw is a lignocellulosic biomass, made up mostly of the structural biopolymers cellulose, at about 30 percent, hemicellulose, at about 25 percent, and lignin, at about 10 percent.
