Smarties are small, biconcave, pastel colored candy tablets about a centimeter across, sold in rolls of 15 and made without peanuts, gluten, fat or dairy. They are produced by the Smarties Candy Company, founded as Ce De Candy Inc. by Edward Dee in Bloomfield, New Jersey in 1949 using pellet making machines repurposed after the Second World War. The company renamed itself Smarties Candy Company in 2011 and confirmed the same year that its candy is vegan. Manufacturing plants in Union Township, New Jersey and Newmarket, Ontario together produce more than 2.5 billion rolls a year.
