Blood meal

Blood meal is a dry, inert powder made from dried animal blood, most often a slaughterhouse by-product of cattle or hogs, used both as a high nitrogen organic fertilizer and as a high protein animal feed. It typically contains about twelve percent nitrogen by weight, among the most concentrated natural nitrogen sources available, and producers dry the blood by methods such as solar drying, oven drying, drum drying, flash drying or spray drying before milling it into meal. Commercially it serves three main purposes: as a dietary supplement supplying lysine to cattle, fish and poultry, as an approved soil amendment in certified organic farming, and, more informally, as a repellent gardeners apply to deter animals such as rabbits, though this last use has debated effectiveness.
