Arctic Apples

Arctic apple is a trademarked, patented line of genetically engineered apples developed by Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. to resist the browning that normally follows slicing or bruising, achieved by silencing the gene that produces the enzyme polyphenol oxidase. It became the first genetically engineered apple approved for commercial sale, cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 2015 and by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in 2017, with both regulators finding it as safe and nutritious as ordinary apples. Three varieties have been approved so far, Arctic Golden, Arctic Granny and Arctic Fuji, and as of 2025 the apples are popular in United States school lunch programs while still not sold to consumers in Canada.
