Stover

Materials

Stover is the dried stalks and leaves of a cereal crop, such as corn, sorghum or soybean, that remain in the field after the grain has been harvested. Also called crop residue, it is comparable to straw but comes from these non-cereal-grain plant parts. Stover can be grazed directly by livestock or dried and stored as fodder. It has also drawn interest as a source of biomass for fermentation and as a feedstock for cellulosic ethanol production, and it can be incorporated into mushroom compost. The word derives from the English legal term estovers, the historic right of a tenant to take wood from an estate.
