A horn, in this anatomical sense, is a permanent pointed projection on the head of various animals, made of a covering of keratin and other proteins around a core of live bone, distinct from antlers, which are not permanent. Among mammals, true horns occur mainly in ruminant artiodactyls, in the families Antilocapridae (pronghorn) and Bovidae, and cattle horns arise from subcutaneous connective tissue before fusing to the underlying frontal bone.
