AV receiver

An AV receiver is a consumer electronics component that acts as the central hub of a home theater, home audio or hi-fi system. It receives audio and video signals from sources such as TV tuners, satellite receivers, Blu-ray and DVD players and game consoles, then processes those signals, supplies power amplification to drive the loudspeakers, and routes video to a display. A single AV receiver combines functions once handled by separate components, typically an amplifier, a preamplifier, an equalizer and a decoder, and most modern units add multichannel amplification such as 5.1 or 7.1 channel surround sound, digital audio decoding, video switching and conversion, and a built in radio tuner, with the whole system controlled from one remote.
