J. Richard Hackman was a Harvard psychology professor who came to Harvard in 1986 after twenty years at Yale. He studied the dynamics of teamwork and effective leadership, including self-managing groups, and his fieldwork sometimes took him to the cockpit of an airliner to observe the crew at work. He died in Boston on January 8, 2013, at the age of 72, after complications from lung cancer. With Greg Oldham he is credited with the Job Characteristics Model, which this atlas records as a management theory.
