Pharmacy Industry

Consumer Staples

A pharmacy, also called a chemist in Britain or a drugstore in North America and known formally in the industry as retail pharmacy, is where most pharmacists practice the profession of dispensing medicine, typically through a retail storefront built around a dispensary where medications are stored and dispensed. In North America, drugstores commonly sell not only medicines but also confectionery, cosmetics, office supplies, toys, hair care products, magazines, and occasionally refreshments and groceries alongside their pharmacy counter. The retail pharmacy trade embodies a distinct dichotomy at the center of the profession, employing health professionals who are simultaneously retailers, a combination that separates it from pharmaceutical manufacturing, which develops and produces the medicines pharmacies dispense rather than selling them directly to the public.

FAQs

Why do pharmacists dispense medicines instead of making them?

Because the pharmaceutical industry took over making medicines.

Industrial manufacture took over the making of medicines. In the nineteenth century American pharmacists were artisans who prepared pills, powders, tinctures and ointments by hand, but by the middle of that century a pharmaceutical industry was supplying medicines that pharmacists had previously made entirely by hand. In the twentieth century new medications came from the research and manufacture of that industry, work an individual pharmacist could not duplicate, so compounding gave way to dispensing medications completely prepared by industry. By the 1970s only one percent of prescriptions required some combination or manipulation of ingredients, according to the Encyclopedia.com history of American pharmacy.
