The movie theater industry runs the businesses, called movie theaters or cinemas, that contain auditoriums where films and occasionally television programming are shown to a paying public. Since the 2010s most theaters have carried multiple screens, and the largest complexes, known as multiplexes or megaplexes, a format developed in Canada in the 1950s, can carry as many as thirty screens. The industry has faced real revenue pressure: in Canada total operating revenue was 1.7 billion dollars in 2012, and in the United States ticket sales fell nearly 11 percent between 2004 and 2013 even as box office revenue rose 17 percent on higher prices, with audiences increasingly choosing streaming services and home theater systems over a trip to the theater. Why do movie theaters sell so much food and drink?
Concessions are far more profitable than tickets, and some large chains earn over 40 percent of revenue from food and drink.
Concessions are where theaters earn their strongest profits. A 2023 CNBC report found that theaters generate significantly more profitability from concessions than from tickets, with some large chains taking more than 40 percent of their revenue from food and beverage. Box office results vary with each movie, so chains have turned to upscale menu items such as flatbreads and cocktails, which some theater executives expect will bring in more revenue.
