The information technology consulting industry, also called IT advisory or computer consultancy, advises organizations on how best to use information technology to achieve their business objectives and goals. An engagement typically begins when an organization identifies a technology related need, after which a consulting firm defines the project scope, budget and timeline and guides the work from start to completion, aiming to deliver the agreed results on schedule and within budget. Facts
SectorInformation technology consulting 1 FAQs
How is the size of the information technology consulting market measured?
A narrow definition values it at under a quarter of consulting; broader ones give larger shares.
It depends on the definition used. Consultancy.org says ALM Intelligence defines IT consulting in a relatively narrow manner, and as a result the segment is valued at less than a quarter of the overall consulting industry. Other analysts apply broader definitions and therefore report a larger share, so published market sizes for IT consulting are not directly comparable unless they use the same definition.
What kinds of firms make up the information technology consulting industry?
Large global IT specialists; generalist firms with an IT unit; and niche IT players.
Analysts typically distinguish three types of IT consulting firm: the large global players that specialise in information technology, generalist firms that have a separate IT consulting unit, and niche IT players. Consultancy.org adds that niche players either focus on a specific discipline or market.
