Heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, systems regulate temperature, humidity and indoor air quality in vehicles and buildings, providing thermal comfort and controlling airborne contaminants through heating, cooling, ventilation, filtration and humidity control. The HVAC industry designs, manufactures and installs these systems with attention to energy efficiency, indoor air quality, maintenance and environmental impact, particularly in green building projects, and commonly works alongside mechanical engineers integrating HVAC with other building infrastructure. How does someone train to work in the HVAC industry?
Usually a 6 month to 2 year technical program or a multi-year apprenticeship, plus on-the-job training and refrigerant handling certification.
Most HVAC technicians in the United States have a postsecondary nondegree award, such as a certificate or associate degree from a technical school or community college. These programs generally last from 6 months to 2 years, and some people enter with less education. Others train through an apprenticeship, which usually lasts several years and combines paid on-the-job training with technical instruction in safety practices, blueprint reading and heating and cooling systems. After hiring, technicians typically have a lengthy period of on-the-job training, and the Environmental Protection Agency requires nearly all of them to be certified in proper refrigerant handling.
