The industry that distributes audio and audiovisual content to dispersed audiences through electronic mass communication, operating on a one to many model that typically uses radio waves to reach many receivers from a single source, unlike earlier one to one technologies such as the telephone and telegraph. Content reaches audiences over the air, by cable, by satellite and increasingly by digital streaming, and most countries require a broadcasting license for over the air transmission while cable and streaming operate under separate regulatory schemes. The industry funds itself through advertising, public funding, subscription fees and audience contributions, and began commercially with AM radio in the 1920s before expanding with television after the Second World War and moving from analog to digital transmission in the 2000s.
Facts
FAQs
How is public broadcasting funded?
Mostly license fees, government funds, grants, underwriting and audience contributions.
Public broadcasting is usually run by non-profit, publicly owned stations or networks. Its support comes from license fees, government funds, grants from foundations, corporate underwriting, audience memberships, contributions, or a combination of these. This sets it apart from the for-profit side of the industry, which relies mainly on advertising.
Can amateur radio operators broadcast?
No. Broadcasting means transmissions meant for the general public.
No. In the sense used by United States federal rules, broadcasting means transmissions intended for reception by the general public, either direct or relayed. Private or two-way transmissions do not qualify, so amateur radio and citizens band radio operators are not allowed to broadcast. Transmitting and broadcasting are not the same thing.
