Veolia Environnement S.A. is a French utility and environmental services company headquartered in Paris, the largest water and waste management company in the world by revenue. It traces its origins to the Compagnie Generale des Eaux, a water supply company founded in 1853 under a decree of Napoleon III to provide water services to French cities, which diversified over the twentieth century into waste management, energy and transport before being restructured and renamed Veolia Environnement in 2003. Veolia operates water treatment and distribution systems, waste collection and recycling operations, and district energy and industrial services on behalf of municipalities and industrial clients across the world. The company significantly expanded its waste and water operations in 2021 through its acquisition of its longtime French rival Suez.
