Terna S.p.A.

Terna S.p.A. is an Italian electricity transmission company headquartered in Rome, the operator of Italy's high-voltage electricity transmission grid. Its name is an acronym for Rete Elettrica Nazionale, meaning National Electricity Grid, and the company was formed in 1999 when Italy separated ownership and operation of its national high-voltage grid from the vertically integrated state electricity company Enel, as part of the liberalization of Italy's electricity market. Terna owns and operates the great majority of Italy's high-voltage transmission network, responsible for balancing electricity supply and demand across the country and managing the interconnections that link Italy's grid to neighboring European countries. The Italian state, through the state investment holding company Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, holds a substantial minority stake in the company.
