RWE AG is a German multinational energy company headquartered in Essen, founded in 1898 as Rheinisch-Westfalisches Elektrizitatswerk to supply electricity to the industrial Rhine-Ruhr region. Historically one of Germany's largest producers of electricity from coal and nuclear power, it restructured significantly around Germany's exit from coal and nuclear power in the 2010s and 2020s, spinning off its renewables, retail and network businesses into the separate company Innogy, and RWE itself pivoted toward becoming one of the largest renewable energy generators in Europe.
