Duke Energy Corporation is an American electric power holding company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, tracing back to hydroelectric power companies founded by industrialist James B. Duke in the early 20th century to generate electricity in the Carolinas. It took its present form largely through a 2012 merger with Progress Energy, and is one of the largest electric power holding companies in the United States, serving millions of customers across several southeastern and midwestern states.
