Freeport-McMoRan Inc. is an American mining company headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, formed through the 1981 combination of Freeport Minerals and McMoRan Oil and Gas, later reshaped by its 2007 acquisition of Phelps Dodge, a major American copper mining company with roots reaching back to the 19th century. It is one of the largest copper producers in the world, with major operations including the Grasberg mine in Indonesia, one of the largest gold and copper mines on Earth.
