It was founded on April 28, 2009, by Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler and Charles Adler, and is registered as a public-benefit corporation in Delaware. Creators post projects seeking public funding, and backers pledge money in exchange for rewards or experiences rather than equity, following a patronage model that connects creators directly with their audiences.
