Port Royal and Augusta Railway

The Port Royal and Augusta Railway was a South Carolina railroad operating in the latter half of the 19th century, originally chartered as the Port Royal Railroad in 1856 and completed in 1870, then reorganized under the Port Royal and Augusta name in 1873 by the Georgia Railroad. It ran 112 miles of track at a gauge of 4 feet 9 inches connecting Port Royal and Augusta, carrying freight and passengers, but it faced financial difficulty and legal disputes over alleged trade diversion by the Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia. Georgia repealed its charter and the company was liquidated in 1894, with its assets folded into the Charleston and Western Carolina Railway by 1898.
