This child group collects United States Railroads members headquartered or historically based in the Middle Atlantic Census division (New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania). It spans the great anthracite and trunk-line carriers of Pennsylvania and New Jersey (the Lehigh Valley Railroad, the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway, the Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway, the Monongahela Railway, the Sussex Railroad, the Port Reading Railroad), New York lines (the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad, the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway), and Conrail and its modern successor Conrail Shared Assets Operations, both centered on the Northeastern network of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. At 57 members it sits well under this atlas's oversized-group threshold and needs no further split.
