The Chicago Great Western Railway was a Class I railroad linking Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha and Kansas City. Founded by Alpheus Beede Stickney in 1885 as the Minnesota and Northwestern Railroad, a regional line between St. Paul and the Iowa state line, it was renamed Chicago Great Western in 1892 as it grew into a multi-state carrier through mergers and new construction, becoming one of the last Class I railroads built in the United States.
