Rutland Railroad

The Rutland Railroad was a railroad in the northeastern United States, chartered in 1843 as the Rutland and Burlington Railroad and renamed the Rutland Railroad by 1867, operating primarily in Vermont with an extension into New York. At its maximum extent it ran about 400 miles in an inverted L-shape from Chatham, New York, north to Alburgh, Vermont, and west to Ogdensburg, New York, carrying freight dominated by dairy products, particularly milk, and passengers aboard trains such as the Green Mountain Flyer and the Mount Royal between Montreal, New York City and Burlington. The New York Central Railroad acquired a controlling interest in 1904, selling half of its shares to the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad in 1911; labor disputes and financial decline ended operations in 1961, with formal abandonment in 1963 and the State of Vermont purchasing substantial portions that became the successor Vermont Railway.
