North East England Railroads

This child group collects English Railroads members headquartered or historically based in North East England, the smallest of the nine regional child groups this atlas splits the parent group into. It includes the Stockton and Darlington Railway, opened in 1825 between collieries near Shildon and the towns of Stockton and Darlington in County Durham and recognized as the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives; the North Eastern Railway, incorporated in 1854 and centered on York and the North East before its 1923 absorption into the London and North Eastern Railway; the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway and the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway, two of the region's formative main line companies; the Lambton Railway, a County Durham colliery line; and the Cleveland Railway, an iron ore mineral line around Guisborough. At 6 members it sits well under this atlas's oversized-group threshold and needs no further split.
