Port Whitby and Port Perry Railway

The Port Whitby and Port Perry Railway was a railway company that connected Whitby to Port Perry, about 50 kilometers east of Toronto, built to link local grain and logging interests with the Lake Ontario railway mainlines; it opened in 1871 and was later extended northeast to Lindsay as the Whitby, Port Perry and Lindsay Railway. Nicknamed the Nip 'n Tuck for its reputation for unreliability, the company was purchased by the Midland Railway in 1881 and leased to the Grand Trunk Railway in 1884; its last train ran in 1939 and the rails were lifted in 1941 for wartime steel production.
