Appenzell Railways

Appenzell Railways, known in German as Appenzeller Bahnen, is a Swiss railway operator headquartered in Herisau that runs a network of railways and a bus line across the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, St. Gallen and Thurgau. The current company was formed on 1 July 2006 through the merger of the former Appenzeller Bahnen, founded in 1988, with three mountain railways, and it operates as a publicly traded joint stock company. As of 2020 it employed 216 people and reported revenue of 41.9 million Swiss francs in 2012, running eight regional train services plus a bus line over track built to several different gauges and electrification systems reflecting the heritage lines absorbed during consolidation. In 2021 it further expanded by acquiring the Frauenfeld-Wil railway.
