Yates and Thom Ltd

Yates and Thom Ltd, also known as Yates of Blackburn, was a British manufacturer of stationary steam engines and boilers at the Canal Ironworks in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, tracing its origins to a blacksmith's shop started by William Yates in 1824. The company supplied major mill and colliery winding engines, including a 3,300 horsepower twin tandem compound engine that survives at the Astley Green Colliery Museum as the largest steam winding engine used on the Lancashire Coalfield. In 1928 it became Foster, Yates and Thom after acquisition by Joseph Foster and Sons, continuing to manufacture boilers until 1964 before the remaining works closed in 1973.
