Scandinavian Airlines, commonly known as SAS, is the joint flag carrier of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, headquartered near Stockholm and formed in 1946 as a consortium of the three countries' national airlines. It was a founding member of the Star Alliance in 1997 and operates hub airports in Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. SAS filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States in 2022 amid heavy financial losses, emerging in 2023-2024 under new majority ownership led by Air France-KLM, the American investment firm Castlelake and the Danish state, with the restructured airline moving its alliance membership from Star Alliance to SkyTeam in 2024 to align with its new principal shareholder.
