Via Rail

Via Rail is Canada's national intercity passenger rail service, a Crown corporation created by the Canadian federal government in 1977 to take over passenger operations that had previously been run at a loss by the country's freight railroads, chiefly Canadian National. It operates passenger trains on routes across Canada largely using track owned by Canadian National and other freight railroads rather than track of its own, connecting major cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver as well as remote communities with few other transportation links. Via Rail remains wholly owned by the Government of Canada and receives ongoing federal operating subsidies.
